MORNING MANNA          2-18-24

CHRIST’S COMMAND

“And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou? And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself“. Luke 10:25-27

We cannot live alone. No one of us can be entirely independent of others. I am not only a centre, but I am part of another man’s circumference; and every other man, woman or child I know is part of my circumference. We are members one of another. In other words, we all have neighbours; and a complete human life, which has windows opening to the Infinite Creator, must have doors opening on the street towards our finite fellow-creatures.

When we talk about neighbours, we naturally think of those who live next door, and we are apt to reduce the divine command to those who reside in the same street. If these are very comfortable and well-to-do, it seems as though there is not much scope for helping them. This definition of neighbours, however, is altogether too narrow and contracted, as our Lord shows in the parable of the Good Samaritan. The lawyer asked who was his neighbour, and Jesus said, “Be a neighbour to someone else.’” And if it be asked what kind of people I am to neighbour, the answer comes: “Make no distinction of race or creed; but wherever you come across a man who has been stripped, beaten, robbed, and is half-dead, don’t wait for other men to succour him. but bind up his wounds; minister to him, and treat him as though you loved him with the natural love of brotherhood.”

A rich man might have paid an agent to patrol that dangerous road from Jerusalem to Jericho, and to look after those in distress, but it would not be so blessed in its effect on his own character, or on the men who were helped, as personal ministry would be. We ought to combine the two, because our personal experience of such cases will enable us to direct our agents, and live in their efforts, so that they may become our own. Perhaps the better policy is to get elected on the Council, or Magistrates’ bench, so that we may put down the gangs of thieves which infest life’s highways.

Remember that a gift of money is by no means the only way of helping your neighbours. What men and women need most is compassion, sympathy, your hand and heart-help. “Silver and gold have I none” has been the confession of some of the greatest benefactors of our race. Above all, it was true of our Lord Himself, who became poor that He might really help us, as He never could have done had He remained rich. Let Him be our Example, Who came not to be ministered unto, but to minister.–F. B. Meyer

THE THRONE OF GRACE
“Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace–that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” Hebrews 4:16

We might have been summoned to appear before the throne of Divine Justice–and then every mouth would be stopped, and all would stand guilty before God.

But behold! We are invited to come to the throne of grace! And for what purpose? That we might obtain mercy, that we might receive a free pardon–complete forgiveness of all our sins! And not only this, but that we might “find grace to help in time of need.”

The throne of grace is never vacant. The gracious King ever sits there in all His power and in all His willingness, to bless His redeemed people.

The throne of grace is always accessible. Not once a year merely, nor once a week, nor once a day, may we approach it–but at all times, and under all circumstances.

Oh, what a privilege, my soul, is this! To be permitted, nay, invited and welcomed–to come to the throne of grace whenever you are in want, and for whatever you need! May I come as I have often come before–only more reverently, more trustfully, with larger desires and fuller expectation.

UNSPEAKABLE  CONSOLATION

Writing an article can be satisfying, but reading a classic is sensational. Here’s an example taken from the book “Comfort in Affliction “ by James Buchanna,1837. However, the wonder of the article is what the text says, not what the writer says about it.

“He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?”- Rome.8:32

We have the unspeakable consolation of knowing that the same divine and compassionate Redeemer who suffered, and bled, and died on for us–has the entire management of our affairs; and that nothing can happen in the course of providence, which is not appointed by Him “Who loved us and gave Himself for us!”

In proportion to our persuasion of His love for us, should be our confidence in His government over us. And what proof of sincerity, or what pledge of love, can we desire–which is not given by His past dealings on our behalf? If He died for us on the cruel cross–then certainly He will now, when all things are put under His power, “make all things work together for our good!”

We may rest assured that the love which He manifested for us on earth, is but a pledge of the love which He still bears to us–and that He will neither forget nor forsake us, until He has accomplished the grand end of His mission, by our deliverance from all evil, and our joyful entrance into the glorious kingdom of Heaven!

Oh! how cheering to know, that amidst the joys of Heaven–Jesus has not forgotten any one of His “little flock” for whom He suffered in the garden and on the cross!

PRAYER PROMPTER:God not only prompts the asking—he also provides the answer.

 THE SOLE SOURCE OF SATISFACTION

BY Jonathan Edwards

“Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.” Psalm 16:11

Spiritual delight in God arises chiefly from His beauty and perfection–and not from the blessings which He gives us.

God is the highest good of the reasonable creature–and the enjoyment of Him is

the only happiness with which our souls can be satisfied!

To go to Heaven, fully to enjoy God
––is infinitely better than the most pleasant accommodations here in this poor world. This is better than fathers and mothers, husbands, wives, or children, or the company of any, or all earthly friends.

These are but shadows, the enjoyment of God is the substance!

These are but scattered beams, God is the sun!

These are but streams, God is the fountain!

These are but drops, God is the ocean!

The godly are destined for infinite and inconceivable happiness–for

those who have Christ, have all that they need, and need no more!

“

Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.”1 John 3:2

“
For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better:” Philippians 1:23

PRAYER PROMPTER:  Bending our knees in prayer keeps us from breaking under the load of care.

DELAYED BY DESIGN

“Then it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God led them not through the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, “Lest peradventure the people repent when they see war, and they return to Egypt.”- Exodus 13:17

A quick glance at a map of the Mediterranean world shows the proximity of Egypt to the Promised Land. It should have taken only a few days for Moses and the Israelites to walk around the southeast corner of the Mediterranean Sea to Canaan. But Moses led the people into the Sinai desert so they would not encounter the warlike Philistines and flee back to slavery in Egypt. The Israelites complained, not knowing that being alive at the hand of Moses was better than being dead at the hand of the Philistines.

How many times do we complain about life’s circumstances without knowing what’s going on behind the scenes? God’s hand of mercy and grace is at work, protecting us and guiding our steps more times than we are aware. Our response ought to be, “Lord, thank you for this delay” instead of, “Lord, why are you allowing me to be inconvenienced?”

Make it a habit to thank God for His providential protection–the shield of His faithfulness that surrounds you moment-by-moment.(copied).

PRAYER PROMPTER: Adversity should never get the Christian down—except on his knees.
