MORNING MANNA           10/30/20

October 30, 2020 By Pastor David Stone

“And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.” – Psalms 50:15

Keep the straight path of duty, and if troubles come, or difficulties arise, thy God invites thee to call upon Him. He will come to thy help and bring all His boundless resources with Him.

He is always within call. His ear is never heavy, that it cannot hear; His arm is not shortened, that it cannot reach or save. He can make thy greatest troubles prove thy choicest blessings; He can give thee cause to bless Him through eternity, for thy sorest trials.

Oh, trust Him, and fear not! Run not to creatures; but, “Arise and call upon thy God.” Look not to others, until thou hast proved that He cannot, or will not help; and that will never be. His heart is too kind, His word is too faithful.

Art thou in trouble this morning? If so, you have a special invitation from thy God to pay Him a visit, and lay thy whole case before Him; expecting His sympathy, interference, and blessing; He says, “Call upon me in the time of trouble. I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.” He is faithful who hath promised.

Oh, trust Him, for so you honour Him; expect from Him, and you cannot be disappointed. Wait for Him, and you shall not be ashamed.- James Smith, 1840

Dear refuge of my weary soul
On Thee, when sorrows rise,
On Thee, when waves of trouble roll,
My fainting hope relies.

MORNING MANNA           10/29/20

October 29, 2020 By Pastor David Stone

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” – John 3:16

“We love him, because he first loved us.“- 1 John 4:19

“Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.”- 1 John 4:11

“God so loved the world” – that we know. What we don’t know is the “breadth, the length, the depth, and height” (Eph. 3:18) of His love. There is no way to measure God’s love toward us. Neither is there any way we can love Him as much He deserves. But we could love Him more.

Charles Spurgeon said, “I feel that, if I could live a thousand lives, I would like to live them all for Christ; and I should even then feel that they were all too little a return for His great love to me!” How could any blood bought believer not feel the same? Seeing this is the first and great commandment ( Matt. 22:37-38) and that we are helpless by nature, how can we possibly love God? We can’t merely force ourselves to do so. Neither can we be forced. As J. C. Philpot said, “We are not flogged into loving Him, but are drawn by love into love”. Indeed we are! We love Him because He first loved us. How do we know? Just look to Jesus! See Him there upon the cross for our sins and see Him raised again for our justification. That’s love!

There should be no question about God’s love. The only question has to do with our love for Him. Where is the evidence? Octavius Winslow said, “it is utterly impossible to know Christ, and not become inspired with a desire to love Him supremely, to serve Him devotedly, to resemble Him closely, to glorify Him faithfully here, and to enjoy Him fully hereafter!”

The degree of our love for Christ can be determined by the measure of our devotion to Him. that being the case you have to wonder if some people love Him at all. And especially when you consider that the first commandment is connected to the second – “Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself” ( Matt. 22:39). Not only do we love Him because He first loved us, we also love others as a result of loving Him. – HDS

MORNING MANNA          10/28/20

October 28, 2020 By Pastor David Stone

“And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.” –  1 John 4:16

Who shall describe it? What tongue or pen can set it forth? It is infinite, and what can finite mortals say? It is eternal, and how can we who are but of yesterday declare it?

It is the present heaven of the saints, to know and believe the love that God hath to them. None can reveal it to us, or shed it abroad in our hearts, but the Holy Ghost. He can direct our hearts into the love of God, and into the patience of Jesus Christ. He is in office to show the saints the things of God, and enable them to believe and enjoy them.

Let us, beloved, daily pray that we may know and enjoy the love that God hath to us; it will be an antidote to all our miseries, a source of joy under all our sorrows. Our friends and frames may change, but the love of God is unchangeable. Our temporal prospects may be all blighted, but if we know and enjoy the love of God, we cannot be unhappy.

Who, or what shall separate us from the love of God? Jesus has told us that we shall never perish, neither shall any pluck us out of His hand. The love of our God is the source of our happiness, and the cause of our safety. Oh, to know and believe the love which God hath to us. God is love. – J C Ryle

What shall I do my God to love?
My loving God to praise?
The length, and breadth, and height to prove,
And depth of sovereign grace?

MORNING MANNA         10/27/20

October 27, 2020 By Pastor David Stone

“That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.”– Eph. 3:17-19

“Isn’t the love of Jesus something wonderful” the old song says. And I say, “Indeed it is! It is so wonderful that it “passeth knowledge” ( Eph. 3:19). it is so marvellous that, as another song says – “I could sing forever of Jesus’ love divine”. To think that God, who is holy, could and would love sinful man staggers the mind. Our feeble minds simply cannot grasp something so glorious as that. The “breadth, and length, and depth, and height” ( Eph. 3:18) goes far beyond what we can understand or explain.

However, although beyond our apprehension, it is not beyond our appreciation. We don’t merely marvel at it, we love Him because He first loved us. And loving Him is the key to us living for Him. It is also a means of humility. Regardless of how much we love Him, we have nothing in which to boast, save in the cross of Christ where His love was displayed. We who deserve nothing can rejoice in knowing that in Christ we have life’s greatest treasure. His love is unearned, undeserved, unequalled, unfailing, unfathomable, and unending. Why then should we ever complain? James Smith wrote, “Wonder, O heavens, and be astonished, O earth! That Jesus should have fixed His love upon such poor, depraved, insignificant creatures – and that from eternity past!”

No wonder that we’re told to keep “Looking unto Jesus” ( Heb. 12:2). Understanding who we are and what we have in Christ is crucial to our well being and success. Keeping that in mind we never have cause to complain and always have a reason to rejoice.- HDS

MORNING MANNA         10/26/20

October 26, 2020 By Pastor David Stone

“For whether we be beside ourselves, it is to God: or whether we be sober, it is for your cause. For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead: And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.” – 2 Corinthians 5:13-15

After his conversion, Thomas Chisholm gave up his newspaper career and trained for the ministry. But not long after he became a pastor, ill health forced him to leave the pulpit. Rather than giving up the idea of serving God, Chisholm put his literary skills to work and began to write poems, many of which became well-known hymns. One of the best known is Living for Jesus.

Living for Jesus a life that is true,
Striving to please him in all that I do,
Yielding allegiance, glad-hearted and free,
This is the pathway of blessing for me.

O Jesus, Lord and Savior, I give myself to thee,
for thou, in thy atonement, didst give thyself for me;
I own no other master, my heart shall be thy throne,
my life I give, henceforth to live,
O Christ, for thee alone.

One of the most extraordinary traits of Jesus was His sacrificial love for others. He deserves all glory and praise and worship and service, but rather than insisting on His rights, He devoted Himself to meeting the needs of others. “For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45). If we are going to truly live for Jesus, we must live like Him. And to live like Jesus, we must acknowledge His right to rule and reign over every part of our lives, including being willing to put our own interests and desires after those of others. Our lives are neither for us or about us, but about what God has called us to do for Him. (Daily in the Word)
