MORNING MANNA           10/5/20

October 5, 2020 By Pastor David Stone

And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.- 1 John 5:11-12

As I witness to people, one of the most common misconceptions I hear them express is that our eternal destiny will be settled after we die. Many think that their deeds will be measured, and if they have done “enough” good things, they will be allowed into Heaven. Of course we know the truth that each person’s destiny is determined by whether they accept Christ as Saviour. Yet salvation is so much more than just our getting to go to Heaven—it is also peace, comfort and security while we are here on Earth.

Timothy Dwight, the grandson of Jonathan Edwards who went on to become president of Yale University, wrote: “Christ is the only, the true, the living way of access to God. Give up yourselves therefore to him, with a cordial confidence, and the great work of life is done.” Though there is work God has for us to do as His children, there is no work which we can or must do in order to become His children. That which we could never do for ourselves has already been done for us by our loving Saviour.”

This knowledge should give us confidence. Rather than being tormented by doubt and uncertainty, we can place complete trust in the promise of eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ as our substitute. We do not need to fear the future. This knowledge should also give us a sense of urgency to share the Gospel with others. When we take the Good News to the lost, we are offering them God’s gift of eternal life, as well as the blessings for this life that come from being a child of God. Rejoice today in the fact that, because of Christ, your eternal future is settled and secure.- Daily in the Word

MORNING MANNA         10/4/20

October 4, 2020 By Pastor David Stone

“Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.” – Matt. 5:9

Since I plan to preach about dissension tonight, one of the devil’s dangerous devices, I thought this would be a good time to talk about some of the most important members in a church. Several years ago I preached a sermon entitled “The Most Wonderful Person in the Church”. It didn’t have anything to do with them being gifted, generous, or good natured. It had to do with peacemakers. They are indeed wonderful.

Like most pastors, I have a deep appreciation for peacemakers. You could say they are the glue that holds a church together – a tall task. I’ve seen what differences, debates, and divisions can do to a church and I hope I never see it again. I shudder to think what would happen without peacemakers. It wouldn’t be a pretty picture for sure.

Churches are made up of many different members and that provides the potential for serious problems. Peacemakers work to secure and maintain peace in the congregation. They strive to diminish debates, stifle strife, mend mistakes, and control conflicts. To do that they must be gentle and loving toward all. Their love for Christ compels them to speak the truth in love, forgive others, and to be exemplary in their conduct. And they are always on the job. Their work is never done. They stay busy building bridges rather than barriers.

The peacemaker’s value is far greater than I can describe. Their service is essential. They are blessed and a blessing. Without them a church would be divided, disabled, and destroyed. Their work doesn’t make them a child of God, but it does enable others to recognize and honor them as such. May God help all of us to join their ranks. – HDS

MORNING MANNA           10/3/20

“And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it” – 2 John 6

Many are miserable with their lives. There is a dark cloud of doom and gloom hovering over their head everywhere they go. And, as a general rule, they always find someone else to blame for their sadness. But, truth be known, their misery is the product of their own making. Their attitude and actions have been such as to make joy and peace impossible.

It would be a glad day if they woke up to the fact that they are responsible for their condition and took steps to correct it, but they don’t. They choose to live in disobedience to God, even though they despise the bitter dregs of such behavior. They allow their moments of sinful pleasure to rob them joy and peace. They speak of loving God, but refuse to live in obedience to Him. They either don’t know what true love is or don’t care that it is lacking. Our text sets the record straight – “this is love, that we walk after His commandments“.

Love for Christ is more than merely attending church occasionally, singing hymns, reading the Bible once in a while, and thanking God for our food. Love for God is manifested by obedience to God. It is a desire to please Him who is the object of our affection. It is the surrendering of ourselves to the One who sacrificed Himself for us. It is the giving of yourself to the One who gave all for you. Those who love God obey God! Do you? – HDS

MORNING MANNA          10/2/20

October 2, 2020 By Pastor David Stone

“Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.”- Eph. 6:11-13

Salvation meets our greatest need and changes many things in our life. However, we still live in a fallen world and must do so until God takes us home. Until then we must struggle. I’m sure we all wish life was easier, but it is what it is – a struggle. There is a great never ending conflict going on. It is light vs darkness, good vs evil, God vs Satan, and there is no escape from it until we are in heaven.

That being the case it is crucial that we understand the nature of this warfare. The first thing we need to realize is that it is not against flesh and blood. We are in a spiritual warfare. We face a powerful unseen enemy who is determined to destroy us. So, if we are to prevail we must have spiritual help – the kind of help that God alone can provide. Thankfully, as Christians we have exactly what we need in Christ. By our faith in Him and our faithfulness to Him we can prevail over the enemy. We are “more than conquerors through him that loved us.” ( Rom. 8:37).

Because of Christ we need not be defeated. As Christians, God has equipped us with everything we need to succeed. We, however, must avail ourselves of what God has made available. Unless we appropriate what He supplies we will be defeated. So, in these troublesome times let us take advantage of all we have in Christ and prevail in the struggle. God has equipped us with everything we need to succeed. Because of Christ we can live each day in confidence and be at peace. – HDS

MORNING MANNA      10/1/20

October 1, 2020 By Pastor David Stone

“That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.” – Ehp. 3:17-19

The dimensions of the Love of Christ! It is broad as humanity, “for God so loved the world”; the length God’s love had no date of origin, and shall have none of conclusion. God is Love, it continueth ever, indissoluble, unchangeable, a perpetual present tense. Its height—as the Flood out-topped the highest mountains, so that Love covers our highest sins. It is as high as the heaven above the earth. Its depth—Christ our Lord descended into the lowest before He rose to the highest. He has touched the bottomless pit of our sin and misery, sorrow and need. However low your fall, or lowly your lot, the everlasting arms of His love are always underneath.

The Apostle talks by hyperbole, when he prays that we may attain to a knowledge of the knowledge-surpassing love of Christ. We cannot gauge Christ’s love, but we can enjoy it. Probably the only way to know the love of Christ is to begin to show it. The emotionalist, who is easily affected by appeals to the senses, does not know it; the theorist or rhapsodist does not know it, but the soul that endeavours to show the love of Christ, knows it. As Christ’s love through you broadens, lengthens, deepens, heightens, you will know the love of Christ, not intellectually, but experimentally (1Jo 4:11, 1Jo 4:12; 1Jo 4:20-21).

But you say, “there are people in my life whom I cannot love.” Granted, but you must distinguish between love and the emotion or feeling of love. You may not be able to feel love at the outset, but you can be willing to be the channel of Christ’s love. I cannot love, but Christ is in me, and He can. Is it too much to ask that all this should be realized in ourselves and in others? No, because God is already at work within us by His Holy Spirit, and He is able to do infinitely beyond all our highest requests or thoughts. Ask your furthest, think your highest, and the Divine Love is always infinitely in advance.

We thank Thee, O God, for the infinite love which Thou hast given us in Jesus Christ. We have no measure for its heights and depths, its breadths and lengths. Teach us with all saints to know more because we love more. Amen. – F. B. Meyer
