ACCEPTED

May 16, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.”–Ephesians 1:3–6

People do all sorts of things in order to be accepted by a group. Some wear certain clothing and fashions. Others adopt particular hairstyles. They may change what they eat, where they live, and more in an effort to fit in. There are even tragic cases of people severely damaging their lives or committing crimes in an effort to be accepted. As Christians, we have been given the precious promise that we have been accepted by God—not because of what we have done, but because of what Jesus did. As a result, nothing can change that status.

The same grace of God that provides our salvation also settles our standing in His eyes forever. The Bible does not tell us that we might be accepted or that we can be accepted, but that we have already been accepted. The righteousness of Christ that has been applied to our account makes us fit to stand in the very presence of God despite our failings and shortcomings. Recognizing this truth frees us from the constant cycle of worry and uncertainty that comes from trying to be good enough to measure up to a standard we can never meet. God’s grace works in us to give us the ability live righteously so that our witness and fellowship with God are not hindered. But our acceptance is external, coming through God’s grace, and it is eternal, never changing or failing.

Understanding God’s acceptance of us is the basis of our ability to rest in His love.(Today in the Word)

ONE DAY AT A TIME

May 15, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof. “— Matt 6:34

This last reason our Lord gives against anxiety for the future is that we have nothing to do with the future. God gives us life by days, little single days. Each day has its own duties, its own needs, its own trials and temptations, its own griefs and sorrows. God always gives us strength enough for the day as He gives it, with all that He puts into it. But if we insist on dragging back to-morrow’s cares and piling them on top of to-day’s, the strength will not be enough for the load. God will not add strength just to humour our whims of anxiety and distrust.

So the lesson is that we should keep each day distinct and attend strictly to what it brings us. Charles Kingsley¹ says: “Do to-day’s duty, fight to-day’s temptation, and do not weaken and distract yourself by looking forward to things which you cannot see, and could not understand if you saw them.” We really have nothing at all to do with the future, save to prepare for it by doing with fidelity the duties of to-day.

No one was ever crushed by the burdens of one day. We can always get along with our heaviest load till the sun goes down; well, that is all we ever have to do. To-morrow? Oh, you may have no to-morrow; you may be in heaven. If you are here God will be here too, and you will receive new strength sufficient for the new day.– J. R. Miller

One day at a time. A burden too great
To be borne for two can be borne for one;
Who knows what will enter to-morrow‘s gate?
While yet we are speaking all may be done.
One day at a time, but a single day,
Whatever its load, whatever its length;
And there‘s a bit of precious Scripture to say
That according to each shall be our strength.

A VIRTUOUS WOMAN

May 14, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.“– Proverbs 31:10

The description of the virtuous woman given in Proverbs 31, is designed to show what kind of wives godly women should make — and what wives godly men should choose.

A virtuous woman is very assiduous to recommend herself to her husband’s esteem and affection. She conducts herself so that he may repose an entire confidence in her. She shows her love to him, not by a foolish fondness — but by prudent endearments, accommodating herself to his temperament.

A virtuous woman is one who takes pains in her duties. She hates to sit idle and do nothing. Though she may not need to work for her bread, yet she will not eat the bread of idleness.

A virtuous woman takes care of her family and all the affairs of it, not meddling in the concerns of other people’s houses, as she thinks it enough for her to look well to her own affairs.

A virtuous woman is charitable to the poor. She often serves the poor with her own hand, and she does it freely, cheerfully, and very liberally.

A virtuous woman is discreet and obliging in all her discourse — not talkative, censorious, nor peevish. When she does speak, it is with a great deal of prudence and very much to the purpose. The law of love and kindness is written in her heart — and it shows itself in her tongue!

A virtuous woman has a firmness and constancy of mind, to bear up under the many crosses and disappointments which even the wise and godly must expect to meet with in this poor world.

That which completes and crowns her character, is that she fears the Lord. With all these good qualities, she does not lack that one thing needful — she is truly pious. In all she does, she is guided and governed by Christian principles, and a regard to God.

In the day of death, it will be a pleasure for her to think that she has lived to some good purpose. True virtue will have its praise — both from God and man. —Matthew Henry

“Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised. ” Proverbs 31:30

PLANS FOR MOTHER’S DAY

May 13, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.” – Exodus 20:12

The Bible says to “honor your father and your mother,” so when we observe Mother’s Day or Father’s Day, we are obeying the Scripture. You can honor your father and mother three ways: Obey them when you’re young, care for them when they are old, and honor them at all times. How do you give them honor?

  • Show them respect.
  • Express gratefulness. Give them thanks. Learn to develop the attitude of gratitude. Have you thanked your parents for all that they’ve done?
  • Listen to their counsel.
  • Show your parents love. Think of what you owe your parents.  They gave you life.I’m convinced that the closest thing to God’s love is the love of a mother.

Why don’t you sit down and write a letter to your mother or father and tell them how grateful you are for them?  I’ll tell you one thing, they will read it over and over again.  And when they die and you’re going through their things, you’ll find that letter tucked away in their most treasured possessions.  Do it, rather than saying I wish that I had.  And if your parents are not living, give them honor and thank God for their memory.–Adrian Rogers

COMMITTED TO GOD’S WAYS

May 12, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“They that dwell under his shadow shall return; they shall revive as the corn, and grow as the vine: the scent thereof shall be as the wine of Lebanon. Ephraim shall say, What have I to do any more with idols? I have heard him, and observed him: I am like a green fir tree. From me is thy fruit found. Who is wise, and he shall understand these things? prudent, and he shall know them? for the ways of the LORD are right, and the just shall walk in them: but the transgressors shall fall therein.”–Hosea 14:7–9

It’s a common sign to see when you visit parks and wilderness areas: “Stay on the path.” These notices are not given to restrict people from enjoying the parks, but to protect them from danger. Each year hundreds of people get lost because they stray from the marked trails. Usually lost people are located within a few hours, but some people are never found. In fact according to one recent estimate, more than 1,500 people have disappeared in national parks and never been seen again. There is a great danger in deciding that we are capable of determining the path to follow and choosing to go our own way.

This is even more true in the spiritual realm. The Bible is not filled with restrictions meant to keep us from enjoying life, but with Divine guardrails that have been erected to keep us safe and on the right path. How we view God’s commands is vital, for what we believe determines how we will live. Charles Spurgeon said, “Nothing makes a man so virtuous as belief of the truth. A lying doctrine will soon beget a lying practice. A man cannot have an erroneous belief without by-and-by having an erroneous life. I believe the one thing naturally begets the other.” Committing to follow God’s ways no matter what others may do provides safety and blessing.

The only safe path through our world is the one laid out in Scripture.(Daily in the Word)
