FOLLOWER OR FEELER?

May 6, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“….lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; “–2 Tim. 3:4

Feelings, good or bad, can be very powerful. They can move us to action or leave us in a stupor. But as important as they are they cannot take the place of facts and faith. Christians are to live by faith, not feelings. Sadly many make decisions based on their mood rather than God’s message. For them religion is more theatrical than theological. They are feelers rather than followers. As such they are always looking for that which provides what they like. For some it is an emotionally packed service like a rock concert. For others it might be more like eastern mysticism, or a formal gathering where even a hearty “Amen” is out of place. But whatever direction it takes it is all about one thing–the feeling they get. They are more concerned about gratifying the flesh than they are about glorifying God. They want to leave the service with the words of James Brown ringing in their ears–“I feel good!”.

We live in a day when a pastor can use any version of the Bible, ignore the fundamentals of the faith, never denounce sin, and preach any kind of non-sense imaginable and it matters not to most people as long as they get the feeling they long for. Consequently they worship self rather than God. Instead of seeking to conform to the will of God they create an atmosphere that appeals to their carnal desires. As I said, “They are feelers rather than followers”.

Leonard Ravenhill said, “The early church was a lifeboat for rescuing the perishing.Today’s church is a cruise ship for pampering the prosperous….Entertainment is the devil’s substitute for joy. The more joy you have in the Lord, the less entertainment you need.” Far too many pastors today are nothing more than religious hucksters who are willing to give people whatever they want so they can attract a big crowd and make a name for themselves. And sadly there are those who buy what they’re selling. We are in desperate need of a revival that will transform our lives and cause us to return to the old paths. That would bring a feeling like some have never had before! For the child of God the best feeling in all the world is that which comes from knowing you are doing the will of God and that He is pleased by it. The surest way to a miserable life is to make it your purpose to please yourself. Those guilty of such folly are never pleased.– HDS

DON’T LOSE YOUR SONG

May 5, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten.“– (2 Chron. 20:22).

Oh, that we could reason less about our troubles, and sing and praise more! There are thousands of things that we wear as shackles which we might use as instruments with music in them, if we only knew how. Those men that ponder, and meditate, and weigh the affairs of life, and study the mysterious developments of God’s providence, and wonder why they should be burdened and thwarted and hampered–how different and how much more joyful would be their lives, if, instead of forever indulging in self-revolving and inward thinking, they would take their experiences, day by day, and lift them up, and praise God for them.

We can sing our cares away easier than we can reason them away. Sing in the morning. The birds are the earliest to sing, and birds are more without care than anything else that I know of. Sing at evening. Singing is the last thing that robins do. When they have done their daily work; when they have flown their last flight, and picked up their last morsel of food, then on a topmost twig, they sing one song of praise.

Oh, that we might sing morning and evening, and let song touch song all the way through.–Author unknown

Don’t let the song go out of your life
Though it chance sometimes to flow
In a minor strain; it will blend again
With the major tone you know.

What though shadows rise to obscure life’s skies,
And hide for a time the sun,
The sooner they’ll lift and reveal the rift,
If you let the melody run.

Don’t let the song go out of your life;
Though the voice may have lost its trill,
Though the tremulous note may die in your throat,
Let it sing in your spirit still.

GIVE THANKS

May 4, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“Give thanks unto the Lord; call upon his name: make known his deeds among the people“– Psalm 105:1

Cultivating a thankful heart is the key to overcoming discouragement, grief, pain, or discontentment. If we develop the habit of counting our blessings then we, like Paul, can learn to be content—even joyful—in the darkest of times or most difficult of circumstances.

However, the psalmist here reminds us that the greatest benefit of a grateful heart, and therefore the greatest motivation to a thankful spirit, is not the blessing that it brings to us but the witness it is to others. Anyone can be happy and thankful when everything is going well; but what a testimony it is when God’s people are rejoicing among the ruins of their temporal pleasures!

When a child of God is seen searching through the wreckage of shattered dreams, lost loved ones, or debilitating pain for reasons to praise their Lord it is an unparalleled proof of the power of Christ to transform and to satisfy His people. When they publicly call upon His name, making His deeds known among the masses, the gratefulness of God’s children redounds to the glory of God’s grace.

We are nowhere as able to shine for Christ as in the darkness of our own heartache and loss. In that moment we have the greatest potential to fulfill the greatest purpose of our lives — to exalt the name of our Lord Jesus.

So, no matter what your current circumstances, give thanks to the Lord, calling on the name of Christ as your joy and sufficiency. Make known His goodness among the masses.–Copied

A PLACE FOR YOUR PROBLEMS

May 3, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee…” Psalm 55:22

Cast your troubles where you have cast your sins. You have cast your sins onto Jesus–cast your troubles there also!

As soon as the trouble comes, quick, the first thing–tell it to your heavenly Father! Remember, that the longer you take telling your trouble to God–the more your peace will be impaired. The longer the frost lasts–the more likely the ponds will be frozen.

Oh! It is a happy way of smoothing sorrow, when we can cast our burden upon the Lord. Oh, you agitated Christians, do not dishonor your religion by always wearing a ‘frown of concern’. Come, cast your burden upon the Lord.

I see you staggering beneath a weight which He would not feel.
What seems a crushing burden to you–would be nothing but a bit of dust to Him!

See! The Almighty bends His shoulders, and He says: “Here–put your troubles here!“–Spurgeon

A CONSISTENT WITNESS

May 2, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“That your rejoicing may be more abundant in Jesus Christ for me by my coming to you again. Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel; And in nothing terrified by your adversaries: which is to them an evident token of perdition, but to you of salvation, and that of God.”–Philippians 1:26–28

I read about a Sunday school teacher who was trying to make an impression on his class. Looking out at the young men assembled before him, he asked, “Why do people call me a Christian?” After a moment of silence, one of them said, “Maybe it’s because they don’t know you.” Those who know us best should have the highest view of our commitment to following Jesus Christ. Yet too often people live one way in public and at church, and an entirely different way at home or on the job.

There is no off switch for the Christian life. It is not a Sunday “thing,” but a lifetime, an every day complete surrender to God’s purpose. Jesus pointed out the level of devotion that was required to truly follow Him: “And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me” (Luke 9:23).

Our daily life should be a testimony to the power of the gospel to transform people into followers of Christ—not in name, but in action. In our day, the world desperately needs the influence of godly, consistent, loving believers. And it is up to those of us who love Jesus and know the truth to live in a way that lifts up the gospel.

The life that we lead speaks a message far more loudly than the words that we use.(Daily in the Word”)
