KEEP ON DOING RIGHT

May 11, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“And the word of the LORD came to Solomon, saying, Concerning this house which thou art in building, if thou wilt walk in my statutes, and execute my judgments, and keep all my commandments to walk in them; then will I perform my word with thee, which I spake unto David thy father: And I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will not forsake my people Israel.”–1 Kings 16:11–13

William Wilberforce was already a rising star in the British political world when he was saved at twenty-five years of age. His faith led him to take action to end the slave trade within the British Empire, which was a very unpopular idea at the time. Wilberforce was mocked, ridiculed, slandered, and opposed but he continued on. He said, “Our motto must continue to be perseverance. And ultimately I trust the Almighty will crown our efforts with success.” Eventually the tide of public opinion turned, and in 1833, just three days before Wilberforce died, the Abolition of Slavery bill was finally passed into law.

There are many who make judgments of success or failure based on immediate results. And in truth, almost all of us would prefer for things to happen quickly. But most good things are not accomplished immediately. Instead they take continued and persistent effort and investment. When we decide we have failed because something didn’t work right away, we lose both the result that would eventually have come if we had persisted and the character that would have been built by continued effort along the way.

In the end God does not measure by visible results, but by faithfulness. “Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful” (1 Corinthians 4:2). Those who give up and walk away because the task is hard will not ever accomplish anything meaningful. Instead we should keep doing right and trust God for the final outcome.

There is no substitute for the power of continuing to do right regardless of immediate results.–Daily in The Word

TRUE FORGIVENESS

May 10, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.“–Isa. 55:8-9

It is well indeed, that God’s ways differ from ours. For example, if God’s forgiveness were like ours—it would do us little good. We hold our petty grudges and resentments; we remember men’s smallest unkindnesses to us, allowing them to embitter our love, and stop the flow of our affections. We profess to forgive—but retain the grudge in our heart.

But God’s ways of forgiving are not as our ways. He forgives the worst of sinners, the greatest of sins, and the largest number of transgressions. In the parable, it was God who forgave the ten thousand talents; and it was a man who would not forgive his fellow, a miserable pittance. The most wonderful thing in this universe, is God’s forgiveness. We ought to be thankful for it; for if it were less—we could not be saved. Then, when we have received it, we ought to let its spirit work in our heart, to change us into its own image. We pray, “Forgive us—as we forgive others.” If we mean this, we should look well to the kind of forgiveness we show to others.–J. R. Miller

A SAD SIGHT

May 9, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour: yet what I shall choose I wot not. For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better: Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you.”–Phil. 1:21-24

What a wonderful testimony. It is as though Paul is saying heaven can wait. As much as he longed to be with Christ, he realized that it was more needful for him to stay that he could minister to others. Sadly some want to stay for the wrong reasons. Ashton Oxenden explained the problem like this:

One would think that the longer a person lived — the more willing he would be to leave his present earthly abode. But this is not always the case.

Sometimes, alas! we see very aged people clinging to this world even more tightly than the young. We see them close to the grave’s mouth — and yet loving the riches, the pleasures, the trifles of this world — with all their affections! Oh, this is a sad sight! It is sad to see a poor dying creature entering upon a solemn eternity — with a heart glued to the world which he is leaving, and full of its concerns!

When this is the case with a Christian — God often in mercy sends us some affliction. He withers our gourds which have grown up around us, that He may lead us to seek a truer and a safer shelter. He sees that we are too fond of these clay cottages of ours; so He makes the walls to crumble, that we may be content to leave them at His call.

Look at your growing infirmities, dear reader — as so many mercies. Let them serve to remind you that you will not be here always, and that this world “is not your rest, because it is polluted!” Let your growing infirmities make you long for that happier land, where there shall be no more old age — where sorrow and sighing shall be unknown — and where “the inhabitant shall never say, I am sick.”

Oh, it is well for us that all is not health, and strength, and sunshine here — else we would be even fonder than we are, of our present earthly home.

GOD’S WILL

May 8, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. “— Matt 6:10

Many people shrink from God’s will. They think that it always means pain, or sorrow, or bereavement. They always feel melancholy when you speak of doing the Will of God. Alas! how the devil has libeled God. The will of God is the will of a Father. It is the Fatherhood of God going out in action….If only the will of God were done on earth, as it is done in heaven, there would be peace between the nations, and love and happiness in all our homes. Love would cement the union of all men in a city of blessedness. The fact of the world’s present condition is no argument against the beneficence and blessedness of the will of God. It is because men will not do the will of God that things are as they are!

In our own life we shall never be really right or happy until we have got to the point of saying: “I delight to do Thy will, O my God.” We may not begin there. The first step is to choose it, then we shall come to accept it lovingly and thankfully; but, finally, we shall rejoice and delight in it. If you cannot say “Thy Will be done,” say: “I am willing to be made willing that Thy Will should be done.” If your will is like a bit of rough and rugged iron, tell God that you are willing for it to be plunged into the furnace of His love, so that all which is unyielding and obdurate may pass away before the ardent heat of the Divine Fire. Depend on it that He will not fail, nor be discouraged with the long process that may be required; and that He will not be rough or violent. He will stay His east wind. He will keep His hand on the pulse, that He may be aware of the least symptom that the ordeal is too strong.

At first there may be a twinge of pain, as when a dislocated limb is pressed back into its proper position, but afterwards there is the blessed restoration of healthy vigour. You will only lose what you would gladly give up if you know as much as God does of what promotes soul-health. “Whosoever,” said our Lord, “will do the Will of my Father, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.” “In His Will is our peace.”

Most Gracious God, to know and love whose will is righteousness, enlighten our souls with the brightness of Thy presence, that we may both know Thy Will and be enabled to perform it. Amen.–F. B. Meyer

REJOICE REGARDLESS

May 7, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice.”—Phil. 4:4

It has been well said, “Feelings are no substitute for facts and faith”. That is true, but ignored by many. They have no interest in strict Bible doctrines and sincere devotion to duty. Their only concern is for an emotional experience. As long as they feel good all else is forgotten. However, their error should not misguide us and cause us to get in the ditch on the other side of the road. When all else is in order emotions are well and good, not something to be avoided. In some churches you get the impression that silence is a major Bible doctrine to be staunchly defended. You would think smiling, laughing, shouting, and clapping are all out of place.

This isn’t a new problem. It existed with the Puritans many years ago and came to America. During the “First Great Awakening” (1730-1743) opposition against emotions in the church was strong. The criticism was so great that Jonathan Edwards, one of the leading preachers, was compelled to write a book entitled “Religious Affection”–using the word “affection” in the sense of joy, one of the graces that make up the fruit of the Spirit. Strangely his defense of emotions met with strong opposition–mostly from the Congregational ministers of Massachusetts. That debate continues today.

It seems to me that it’s a sad day when people are glad to be sad. How could anyone be content in that condition? Christians should be the happiest people on earth. Considering what Christ has done, is doing, and shall do, we should have joy unspeakable and full of glory. It’s true that some folks have erred by putting feeling ahead of facts and faith, but their failure shouldn’t lead to our folly. We shouldn’t react to their error by going to the other extreme. Wrong is wrong regardless of the direction it takes. We shouldn’t transform the church into a three-ring circus, but neither should we make it a morgue. I realize that different people have different personalities and customs, and everyone doesn’t express themselves in the same way, but the error of one shouldn’t lead to the error of the other. Don’t allow their failure to become your fall.

If you are looking for an explanation as to exactly what is the proper expression of emotion you won’t find it here. I’m not that stupid. But I will say that it should always flow from a sincere heart, with a desire to glorify God, not to put on a show or to gratify the flesh. You need not be as emotional as someone else, but there is never a time when we should not rejoice in the Lord. The best way to get through the toughest times is to worship God as Job did. As Christians we always have a reason to rejoice—make sure you do.—HDS
