GOD GETS THE CREDIT

September 5, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

For the Christian, nothing is so embarrassing as to examine one’s life in the light of first century Christianity. our shortcomings are obvious! Even a casual reading of the book of Acts reveals that things are not the same. Granted, everything shouldn’t be the same–that was a different day. But when it comes to personal devotion, strength of character, compassion for the lost, courage to stand, etc. those early disciples serve as an example for us, and we are way off course!
In that holy record of history we are amazed at what we read. Think about it. That early church was composed of poor, uneducated men who had no unusual talents. They were plain, ordinary, common men, not of the upper crust of society. They had no political clout, rich supporters or financial reserves. Nor were they great orators. Add to that the fact that they lived in a hostile environment and you wonder how they survived, let  alone thrived. Yet, without the aid of TV, radio, printing presses, beautiful buildings, etc. their number grew daily. Thousands were saved and added to the church. Although hated by the majority, that church was the talk of the town.
So why do we struggle so? We’ve got so much more going for us, why do we reach so few? Why are our numbers decreasing rather than increasing? We could make an argument for it being due to a lack of effort, there is some truth to that, but that’s not the main difference. The early church grew because “the Lord added to the church” (Acts 2:47). In other words, it was what God did, not what they did that made the difference. That gets overlooked today.
Modern churches depend too much on what man can do, rather than God. We tend to think that we can be successful if we just do the right things. We suppose a bigger and better staff could get the job done. Or maybe it’s time for a fresh face in the pulpit–a younger preacher that identifies with the younger crowd. Maybe a new program, something with a catchy name will turn things around. Or maybe it’s time to tear the old building down and build something that will attract a lot of attention. The list could go on and on, but none of these things ever get to the heart of the matter. There are churches all across the nation that have all these things and more, and they are still failing to win the lost. The truth of the matter is what Jesus said in John 15:5– ” without me ye can do nothing”.
There’s an old song that puts it all in perspective by saying,”all is vain unless the Spirit”. Exactly! Why can’t we see it? We are like helpless little babes trying to do something that is far beyond our ability. “Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it–“(Psalm 127:1). It was “the Lord working with them”(Mark 16:20) that made them successful. He will work with us also, if we meet His conditions. Don’t dare blame God for our failures. Don’t accuse Him of being unable or unwilling. If we would do things His way He would do “great and mighty things” as He promised. All the failures belong to us and all the successes to Him.
If we would repent sincerely, pray earnestly, feed on the Word daily, witness boldly, give generously, forgive freely, surrender fully’ and serve joyfully, there is no telling what great things God would do. We would be amazed. The problem is we don’t and God won’t until we do. Think about it!

ARE YOU A GETTER OR A GIVER?

August 31, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

It is more blessed to give than to receive.(Acts 20:35)
In his book “The Treasure Principle”, Randy Alcorn tells the story of a successful business man who owned a chain of restaurants, two banks, a ranch, a farm, and real estate ventures. At the age of 59 he was looking for a lakeside retirement home, but God had a different plan.
The man said, “God led us to put our money and time overseas. Before we gave token amounts. Now we put substantial money into missions. We often go to India.” When asked what changed the man replied,”It was realizing God’s ownership. Once we understood that we were giving away God’s money to do God’s work, we discovered a peace and joy we never had back when we thought it was our money!”
That’s a great reminder! God owns it all and He gives us all we have, and He has the right to demand whatever He pleases from us. John Wesley had the right attitude. When a distraught man shouted to him,” Mr. Wesley, something terrible happened! Your house burned to the ground!”, Wesley calmly replied,”No. The Lord’s house burned to the ground. That means one less responsibility for me.” That is a fact that we all would be wise to remember and it would make a big difference in the way God can use us and our reward in heaven. If we really believed that it is more blessed to give than to receive it would make a big difference in our lives.
We need the attitude of the poor widow described in Luke 21:2-4–“And he saw also a certain poor widow casting in thither two mites, And he said, Of a truth I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast in more than they all. For all these have of their abundance cast in unto the offering of God: but she of her penury hath cast in all the living that she had.”. Commenting on this verse, Jack Graham wrote:

In times like this, it’s easy to want to hunker down and hold on to everything we have.

It’s especially hard for those who are out of work or those who’ve been forced to take a reduction in pay. I really do understand that it’s harder to give when there’s not as much there to give as there once was!

Yet at the same time, think about the poor widow in today’s passage who gave everything she had to give to God’s work. While her gift wasn’t worth much monetarily, it was worth much… it was sacred… because she sacrificed to give it.

In the same way, your gifts to the Lord’s work and my gifts to the Lord’s work are made sacred when they come from a sacrificial heart.

Yet how many of us really give this way? How many really make a sacrifice in some area of life, how many are willing to give up a comfort, so that we can contribute to God’s work? Far too few, I’m afraid.

That’s why today, my question is simple. When it comes to the church and God’s Kingdom work in the world today, are you a giver… or a taker?

And if you’d admit that maybe you tip the scale to the side of being more of a taker, what’s one way you could start giving more to God’s work today?

Maybe it’s as simple as getting your family on a budget so that you can be better stewards of the income God’s given you. Maybe it means cutting out cable television for a while. Maybe it means delaying that purchase, or going out to eat less so that you can give more to your church and God’s work around the world today.

I don’t know what your particular situation is, but I do know that as Christians living in America, we’ve grown accustomed to certain comforts and privileges.

I just wonder how many more lives could be reached if every Christian sacrificed one thing so that they could give more to God’s work?

The problem is that far too many people want something for nothing. They don’t want to bear their own burden, as the Bible tells us to do. One of best stories I’ve ever read showing how attitudes have changed has to do with a letter written by Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain). The letter was written to the editor of the New York Herald, wherein Clemens declined to accept money from a fund they had raised for his debt relief. Here’s the story:

“I made no revelation to my family of your generous undertaking in my behalf, and for my relief from debt, and in that I was wrong. Now that they know all about the matter, they contend I have no right to allow my friends to help me while my health is good and my ability to work remains; that it is not fair to my friends, and not justifiable, and that it will be time enough to accept help when it shall be proven that I am no longer able to work. I am persuaded that they are right. While they are grateful for what you have done, and for the kindly instinct which prompted you, it is urgent that the contributions be returned to the givers with their thanks and mine. I yield to their desire, and forward their request and my endorsement of it to you. I was glad when you initiated that movement, for I was tired of the fact and worry of debt, but I recognize that it is not permissible for a man whose case is not hopeless to shift his burdens to other men’s shoulders.”

Nothing that Mark Twain has ever written will so commend him to the honor of mankind, now and in the future, as this letter. One of the important truths that needs emphasizing in our time is Paul’s declaration that “every man shall bear his own burden,” when he is able (Gal. 6:5). That is just as true and as important a statement as the other made in the second verse of the same chapter, “Bear ye one another’s burdens.” Self-respect requires us to do to the full measure of our possibility before we accept sympathetic aid.–THINK ABOUT IT!

MEMORIES ARE MADE OF THIS

August 30, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

Many years ago, before some of you were born, Dean Martin sang a song called “Memories Are Made Of This”. I loved that song and I’m using it’s title to frame my thoughts for today.
Yesterday was “Friend Day” at Lakeway and it was one of those days that will live on in our memories for a long long time! I was blessed before the day even began. Watching the people at work getting ready for the day was a blessing in itself. They worked hard, and with a smile on their face. I didn’t hear one word of complaint (at least not from those actually working). That’s the way it’s supposed to be!
The very first song seem to set the tone for the day. Our choir “Knocked our socks off” with their rendition of “I Just Came To Praise The Lord”.Wow! That was worth the trip! The number in attendance was good (at least 285) and the meal was fantastic! We even had door prizes for our guest–a lot of smiling people left with something to remember the day by. We saw many old friends and made some new ones.
I can’t put my finger on any one thing and say “That’s what made the day so great”, it was just something God did that made it so good. You could see it in the faces of the people and hear it in their voices. There was an unusal spirit of gladness that is unexplainable–a little taste of heaven on earth! While I want to thank the people who made it all possible, more than anything I want to thank God for adding His blessings to their efforts. That made it memorable. I can’t wait to get back to church to see what happens next! Hope to see you there. You never know what you might miss. Think about it!

TOO GRAND FOR HASTY OBSERVATION

August 27, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

Taking a few minutes each day to read a chapter is a good way to start. But we should also block out extended periods of time for exploring God’s Word and reflecting on what He is saying to us. The importance of spending much time with something of great value and beauty is illustrated by a quote from the National Geographic magazine about Carl Sharsmith, an 81 year old guide in Yosemite National Park.

“Carl was back at his tent quarters after a long afternoon with tourists. His nose was flaked white and red with sunburn; his eyes were watery, partly from age but also from hearing again an old question after a half century of summers in California’s Yosemite National Park. A lady tourist had hit him with a question where it hurt: “I’ve only got an hour to spend at Yosemite,” she declared. “What should I do? Where should I go?”

The old naturalist-interpreter-ranger finally found voice to reply. “Ah, lady, only an hour.” He repeated it slowly. “I suppose that if I had only an hour to spend at Yosemite, I’d just walk over there by the river and sit down and cry.”

A whole lifetime is not long enough to appreciate fully the beauty and learning and value of the Bible. That’s why we must take time to study its truths and make them real in our lives. (from Elbourne illustrations)

BEWARE

August 26, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

Things are not always what they seem. We see examples of this all the time. Just yesterday I was shocked when I learned that a well-known Houston doctor had been arrested for assaulting his wife. I see this guy on TV all the time, in ads with the punch line that he cares about people just like he cares for his own family, especially the little girl sitting on his lap.
At first I thought maybe he is being falsely accused or maybe he was provoked, pushed over the edge and acting out of character. He seemed like such a nice guy that I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt. Then I learned more about him. Mr. Nice Guy had his license revoked in 2006 after he tested positive for cocaine use, which was a violation of a 2002 probation order. Then there were references to his behavior in previous marriages. Turns out that Mr. Nice Guy isn’t so nice–certainly not someone I would want cutting on my body!
The point is–don’t believe everything you hear or see on TV, or anywhere else. Things are not always what they seem to be! The Bible warns us repeatedly about false prophets and teachers, wolves in sheep’s clothing. So, before you go hog-wild and pig-crazy over some hot shot preacher with a charming personality you better get your facts straight. Find out what he believes and pay attention to how he behaves.
Every Christian has a responsibility to weigh every message on the scales of God’s word to see if it is true. If we are to avoid being dupped into believing a lie we must carefully examine everything in the light of God’s Word. We should be like those in Berea who “received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so”(Acts 17:11). Don’t ever believe something just because I, or somebody else, says it is so. Get the facts! Get into the Word and make certain that it is the truth you are embracing. You owe it to yourself to do so.
The devil is smarter than you think. He is skillful in the art of deception. He can deceive even the smartest and most educated people, convincing them to believe a lie. Our only defense is the Bible and a sensitivity to the Holy Spirit who enlightens us. Being deceived about a doctor who deals with our physical body is one thing, being deceived by someone about spiritual matters is another and of far greater importance. Don’t let it happen to you. Think about it!
