THE REAL DEAL

May 4, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.–James 1:22

Nothing makes the glorious gospel more repulsive than hypocrisy. No one likes a phony! We admire those who practice what they preach. We often use phrases like, “He’s the real deal”, or “She’s the genuine article” to describe such people. As Christians we need to make sure that others see something of Christ in us. Doing that demands self-examination and this article by Dr. Paul Chappell can help us with that:

Webster’s Dictionary defines the word authentic as “being what is represented or claimed to be.” Sometimes in our day, it’s hard to find products or even relationships that are authentic. We seem to live in an imitation, general brand day and age. Yet, the Word of God calls us to live an authentic Christian life.

An authentic Christian must first be authentically born, by faith, into the family of God.— Beyond conversion to Christ there will also be attributes or fruit that reveal a new nature. An authentic Christian cares about the things of God.

So many people today have an “I don’t care attitude.” They don’t care about the Word of God, the people of God, and their testimony for God. But an authentic Christian, one who is walking according to God’s Spirit, does care!

An authentic Christian cares about pleasing God. These Christians care about the things of God and they desire to please God. Many (professing) Christians today desire to live only for themselves and do not care for the things of God. But an authentic Christian desires to honor and glorify God in all they do. They care about God’s reputation and they care about pleasing Him.

Also, an authentic Christian cares about God’s Word. They desire to read God’s Word and learn more about Him. Even though their day may be hectic, an authentic Christian makes God’s Word and spending time with God important in his life. He knows the importance of God’s Word and he seeks to make God a priority before his other earthly duties. He cares about spending time with God.

Not only does an authentic Christian read God’s Word, he also obeys God’s Word. He understands that God’s Word has the answers he needs in life, and he opens his heart to God as he reads His Word. He does not read it simply as duty, but rather, he heeds God’s commands and obeys His Word. He cares about not only hearing the Word of God, but doing it as well.

Are you an authentic Christian? Do you care about pleasing God, spending time in His Word, and obeying Him? If we love the Lord, we will care enough to obey God. Ask God to help you be an authentic Christian today. Read God’s Word right now and let Him work in your life today.

SPEAK UP

May 3, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

—be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you—.1 Peter 3:15
Too often we Christians talk to each other about telling others about Christ without ever actually telling the lost about our Savior. We discuss our duty without doing it! Sometimes I think we would be better off cancelling a service and spend the time actually serving the Lord. Instead of getting in a holy huddle talking about what we ought to do, break the huddle, get on the field and run the play! This story from the devotional “Senior Living” illustrates what I’m talking about:

The great Christian evangelist, D.L. Moody, was once asked to speak at a convention in Indianapolis. One afternoon, he asked the convention’s song leader to meet him on a street corner downtown at about 6 pm. When Ira Sankey got there, Moody had him stand on a overturned box and sing. This unusual spectacle attracted quite a crowd.

After speaking briefly, Moody persuaded most of the crowd to follow him to a nearby meeting place. They followed in droves and listened intently as Moody shared the good news of Jesus.

Too soon, the convention delegates started arriving, and Moody had to stop preaching. He said simply, “Now we must close, as the brethren of the convention wish to come and discuss the topic ‘How to reach the masses’!”

So often, we think we have to have special training or special knowledge to tell others about Christ.

But like Moody, maybe all you need to do is be creative…and think of simple ways you can share Christ with others.

Maybe it’s fixing dinner for your next-door neighbor. Maybe it’s making a hospital or nursing home visit with a nice card or some flowers.

Whatever it is, God wants you to share His love with those around you. Don’t think or talk about sharing your faith any longer…just go out and do it!

GET BETTER, NOT BITTER

May 2, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

“Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled.”–Hebrews 12:15

Bruce Goodrich was being initiated into the cadet corps at Texas A&M University. One night, Bruce was forced to run until he dropped—but he never got up. Bruce Goodrich died before he even entered college.

A short time after the tragedy, Bruce’s father wrote this letter to the administration, faculty, student body, and the corps of cadets:

“I would like to take this opportunity to express the appreciation of my family for the great outpouring of concern and sympathy from Texas A&M University and the college community over the loss of our son, Bruce. We were deeply touched by the tribute paid to him in the battalion. We were particularly pleased to note that his Christian witness did not go unnoticed during his brief time on campus.

I hope it will be some comfort to know that we harbor no ill will in the matter. We know our God makes no mistakes. Bruce had an appointment with his Lord and is now secure in his celestial home. When the question is asked, ‘Why did this happen?’ perhaps one answer will be, ‘So that many will consider where they will spend eternity.’”

While many people were upset over the tragedy at Texas A&M, Mr. Goodrich showed that even though his son had been killed, he was not going to harbor bitterness against the college or the young people who had caused his son’s death. He let go of the hurt and trusted the Lord’s hand in the situation.

Have you ever known someone who lived with anger and bitterness in their hearts? Maybe they had been wronged or someone had mistreated them years ago, yet they still held onto the hurt feelings.

…. God desires for us to pattern our lives after Him. Think of how many times the Lord was wronged as He lived on earth. Yet nowhere in the Bible do we read of Jesus harboring feelings of bitterness or anger. Rather than holding onto the hurt, He trusted His Father to take care of the situation.

Friend, no matter how long you nurse a grudge, it won’t get better. The root of bitterness is like an infection that spreads from one person to the next. Often bitter people share their bitterness with others. Before you know it, many people are feeling hurt and bitter over something that didn’t even happen to them! You cannot handle bitterness without affecting others.

Have you been wronged? Did someone treat you unfairly or hurt you in some way? Rather than holding onto that bitterness and feeling angry, give it to the Lord. Consider how many times Jesus could have become bitter at those who mistreated Him—but He didn’t! He showed love and forgiveness when others persecuted Him. Ask God to help you let go of the hurt feelings you still have. And the next time you feel hurt or bitter, seek the Lord’s help in letting go of the bitterness and forgiving others. –Dr. Paul Chappell

A JOYFUL SONG

May 1, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

One of the most precious sights in the world is a joyful Christian. One of the most pitiful sights is a Christian who has lost his joy. The surest way to maintain or regain joy is to meditate on God’s Word. Here’s a verse that should help:

“—the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands”   (Isaiah 55:12).

Listen to these encouraging words from the pen of Charles Spurgeon as he comments on this verse:

When sin is pardoned, our greatest sorrow is ended, and our truest pleasure begins. Such is the joy which the LORD bestows upon His reconciled ones, that it overflows and fills all nature with delight. The material world has latent music in it, and a renewed heart knows how to bring it out and make it vocal. Creation is the organ, and a gracious man finds out its keys, lays his hand thereon, and wakes the whole system of the universe to the harmony of praise. Mountains and hills, and other great objects, are, as it were, the bass of the chorus; while the trees of the wood, and all things that have life, take up the air of the melodious song.

When God’s Word is made to prosper among us and souls are saved, then everything seems full of song. When we hear the confessions of young believers and the testimonies of well-instructed saints, we are made so happy that we must praise the LORD, and then it seems as if rocks and hills and woods and fields echo our joy-notes and turn the world into an orchestra. LORD, on this happy May Day, lead me out into thy tuneful world as rich in praise as a lark in full song.

GOD WILL FINISH WHAT HE STARTS

April 30, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

“The LORD will perfect that which concerneth me”   (Psalm 138:8)

Sometimes we feel like we’re “on our last leg”, as the old-timers used to say. We feel that we can’t take another step, that the end is near, that death is certain –so, why even try? It’s during those times that we need to turn to God’s Word and consider the precious promises our Heavenly Father has given to us. Here’s a good example:

He who has begun will carry on the work which is being wrought within my soul. The LORD is concerned about everything that concerns me. All that is now good, but not perfect, the LORD will watch over, preserve, and carry out to completion. This is a great comfort. I could not perfect the work of grace myself. Of that I am quite sure, for I fail every day and have only held on so long as I have because the LORD has helped me. If the LORD were to leave me, all my past experience would go for nothing, and I should perish from the way. But the LORD will continue to bless me. He will perfect my faith, my love, my character, my lifework. He will do this because He has begun a work in me. He gave me the concern I feel, and, in a measure, He has fulfilled my gracious aspirations, He never leaves a work unfinished; this would not be for His glory, nor would it be like Him. He knows how to accomplish His gracious design, and though my own evil nature and the world and the devil all conspire to hinder Him, I do not doubt His promise. He will perfect that which concerneth me, and I will praise Him forever. LORD, let Thy gracious work make some advance this day! (Faith’s Checkbook)

When you feel your life is over, just remember this –no child of God in the will of God can die pre-maturely. You will live as long as God wants you to live and nothing can cut your life short. You might die tonight, but if you do it just means that your work is over, God has finished what He wanted to do through you and He has something much better for you. If we are obedient, God will finish what He has started in our life. God’s will is right, best, and safest. The safest place on earth is the center of God’s will.
