PATIENCE OF THE SAINTS

October 19, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus“– Revelation 14:12

We generally tend to think of “patience” as being a passive virtue, the ability to not fret or fume when things are not going our way. However, here we see patience described in terms of action and faithfulness.

The mark of sanctified patience, we are told, is keeping the commands of God and holding to the faith of Jesus, even in the midst of great personal struggle, pain, or discouragement. It is continued and committed action in the face of overwhelming challenges.

This is not the patience that we are used to contemplating or aspiring to. This patience is not merely waiting; it is also working. But doesn’t this truth coincide with your experience as a Christian?

One of the greatest weapons the devil uses against us is discouragement. If he, then, can render us dormant and inactive by sending trials our way, then he has effectively silenced our Christian witness. The only solution for the Christian who is facing opposition or tragedy or uncertainty is therefore to continue the Christian walk, obeying their Lord’s commands and persevering in the faith of Jesus.

All of us have a tendency to just shut down—or at least slow down—when difficulties come our way. But the way of patience is to endure the trial with faithful, continual service to Jesus Christ.–Baptist Bible Hour

THE HOUR OF IDOLATRY

October 18, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“A son honoureth his father, and a servant his master: if then I be a father, where is mine honour? and if I be a master, where is my fear? saith the LORD of hosts unto you, O priests, that despise my name. And ye say, Wherein have we despised thy name?“–Mal. 1:6

Someone said, “Sunday morning is the greatest hour of idolatry of the week”. He might be right. I say that because many who think they are worshiping God aren’t worshiping the God of the Bible. Man has created a god in his own image, a figment of his imagination. He has created a god that is more like Santa Claus than the true and living God. When you tell them the truth about who God is and what He does and they are repulsed. They imagine a God who jumps through hoops on command, one that they can comprehend and control. They want a god in a box– where they can shut Him in while they sin and let Him out when they have a need.

Even people who acknowledge that there is a God often do not see Him as He is. The only attribute they acknowledge is love, and even then it is tainted. To them He is seen only to give and help, rather than command, control and condemn. They speak of Him as being terrific rather than “terrible” as He is described in the Bible. Even when sin is mentioned it is not generally labeled as such, nor feared as something destructive. Rather than calling it what it is they give it another name or dismiss it as a “disease”.

The Bible describes man as coming short of the glory of God, but that doesn’t trouble the average person. He yawns and shrugs his shoulders as if to say “So what?” Failing to see that God made us for Himself they suppose that He exists for the sole purpose of providing help and happiness for them. If we are to truly worship God we must acknowledge Him as He is described in the Bible, adore Him for who He is, and appreciate what He has done. We have no right to redefine God, so as to make Him pleasing to us. God is what He is and we should never make foolish assumptions about Him. We know what He is and what He wants by what He says, but sometimes that doesn’t match up with what people say about Him.

Guessing about God isn’t acceptable, and even sincerity isn’t sufficient. Our beliefs about God must be according to the truth, not tradition; the Scriptures, not suggestions or subjective experiences; fact not fantasy. Indeed, Sunday morning just might be “the greatest hour of idolatry of the week”. Your “god” might not be God at all. We cannot “worship God as we please”–as people say. True worship must be “in spirit and in truth“(John 4:24). To do anything else you might as well be dancing around a totem pole, worshiping the creature rather than the Creator. If we are not worshiping the true and living God one religion is just as good as another and it is idolatry– even when done on Sunday morning in a church.

ARE YOU CONTENT?

October 17, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“be content with such things as ye have“–(Heb. 13:5)

“Yeah, I’m content!”— You’re kidding, right? That just might be the most common lie on earth. Listen to yourself! Maybe you ought to record what you say throughout the day and play it back to yourself before bed time each night. Listen to yourself carefully. In total disregard for what the Bible says we indict ourselves everyday. We are always pining, reaching, craving, and begging for something more, something else, something bigger, better, or different. And it’s not just about material things, although that might be number one on the list, it has to do with every area of life.

The Bible says,”– having food and raiment, let us be therewith content“(1 Tim. 6:8), and “be content with such things as ye have“( Heb. 13:5), but who is? Very very few! That’s bad enough, but it’s even worse that we keep lying about it— as though God doesn’t know and others can’t tell. Your words bear witness against you. We’re like a bunch of spoiled brats, never satisfied with what we have and/or where we are in life. Have you noticed that covetousness and complaining go hand in hand? We can’t keep our mouths shut. Eventually we end up revealing what is in our heart. We don’t like our situation and we’re going to tell someone about it.

Even when we are forced by evidence to admit that we aren’t content we come up with some explanation to excuse it. Is that not an evidence that we don’t really believe that “all things work together for good“? We accept the good but complain about the bad. But the command to be content doesn’t change with the circumstances. We are to be content regardless of our situation–good, bad, or ugly. Does that sound unreasonable to you? Probably so. It just doesn’t seem right that we are to be content when we’ve been wronged. Surely, we think, the wrong gives us the right to vent our frustration, so we allow ourselves to be controlled by our feelings.

No one can force you to be content. You are the only one who can do that. Ask yourself this question, “Does my discontent and complaining make things any better? The answer is “No”. Since that’s the case, ask yourself this question, “Would I be happier if I obeyed the Bible by being ‘content with such things‘ as I have?” There’s your answer. We make ourselves miserable. We can blame the other person or God all we want but in the end we have only ourselves to blame. No one can take your happiness–it must be surrendered and we give it up when we allow ourselves to be discontent. Remember, those who deserve nothing, should be content with everything, and not complain about anything. God help us all!–HDS

WHAT MAKES YOU GLAD?

October 15, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“The LORD hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad”.–Psalms 126:3

This could be the text for a thousand sermons! To list all the great things God has done would be impossible. His blessings are more than can be numbered. However, it is important that we count our blessing, the best we can, and rejoice in them. That can keep you going when the road is rough, the times are tough, and the days are difficult. We live in troublesome times and we’re often discouraged by our difficulties. Fears cause us to lose our focus and blinds us to our blessings. Then things go from bad to worse. To prevent that we must remember that we not only have a responsibility to rejoice, but a reason also–many reasons. We dare not overlook them.

Some times we are guilty of overlooking things that should be cause for great rejoicing. For example, someone inquires about how church was Sunday and we say, “The attendance was up, three were baptized and, O yeah one was saved”. We witness a soul being saved and then mention it with no more excitement than a comment about the weather. How can that be? How excited would you be if someone paid off all your debt and deposited a million dollars in your account? Or if your dearest loved one was healed of terminal cancer? Or, what if God raised your dearest loved one from the dead? Imagine that! Yet the salvation of a soul is an even greater miracle than any of those things. How can we not get excited about seeing someone born again?

If getting a raise, having your team win a ball game, or seeing your candidate win the election excites you more than a soul being saved, something is horribly wrong in your life. Absolutely nothing is more important or glorious than the salvation of a lost sinner. It is a great blessing to witness someone become a child of God, to have all their sins forgiven, to be delivered from their sins, and to be assured of a home in heaven. If ever there was a “WOW!” moment that is it. Witnessing this will cause you to have a good day even though everything else seems to be going wrong. Perhaps the best evidence that a church needs a revival is its lack of concern for lost souls. Just how glad are you when a sinner is saved? — HDS

REASONS TO BELIEVE

October 14, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“And He marvelled because of their unbelief.” – Mark 6:6

Unbelief is represented as filling Jesus with surprise; and is it any wonder, especially our unbelief? Consider what God hath done to remove doubt. He hath sent His character, “God is love.”

He hath made a proclamation, “Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.’ He hath given an invitation, “Look unto me, and be ye saved.” He hath employed entreaty, “As though God did beseech you by us, we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God.”

He hath issued a command, “This is His commandment, that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ.” He hath sworn an oath, “That by two immutable things in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have strong consolation.” He hath given His Son as a pledge, to assure us that “whosoever believeth on Him shall never perish, but have eternal life.” He hath added the testimony of all His saints.

Well then may He marvel at our unbelief. Never let us attempt to excuse it, but let us plead and pray against it, until we conquer it.—James Smith, 1840
