DON’T FORGET THE WORD

October 13, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways. I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word. Deal bountifully with thy servant, that I may live, and keep thy word.”–Ps. 119:15-17

Urging people to spend more time in prayer and Bible study seldom meets with success. They seem to think you are trying to torture them, or at least deprive them of better things. If you feel that way all I know to say is, “WOW! Someone has surely misled you”. That’s like saying a love letter from your sweetheart is boring. Are you kidding me? How can you not get excited about God speaking to you? Were His voice loud and audible would that make a difference? Why? Knowing it comes from our loving heavenly Father should be all that matters. Whether you understand it or not, He has chosen this as the means best suited for us.

I’ve got the feeling that most people think this is only for preachers and teachers. They fail to see that this is something every Christian needs. It’s not just something we enjoy, it is essential to our well-being and our effectiveness as servants of the Lord. You wonder why you can’t resist temptation, defeat depression, experience joy, rest in peace, conquer doubt, calm fears, gain wisdom, and all the while you neglect the very thing needed to do these things. What do you expect? There are consequences to our choices and neglect of God’s Word is one of the worst you can make. In these verses we see the writer’s promise, pleasure, pursuit, plea, and purpose. What about you? What could be said about your attitude toward the Word of God? I speak about this subject often because I know how important it is. I beg you–please stop depriving yourself of that which you need most. Don’t just read your Bible, study it and meditate in it. Blessing are sure to come to those who do.

F. B. Meyer said, “Listen attentively to the Word of Truth, written or spoken. Be quick to notice the smallest symptom of inconsistency between your life and the perfect beauty of Jesus, and set yourself immediately to correct it. Be merciful to the failings of everyone else, but be merciless to your own. Let no fault remain uncorrected, and no call to duty unanswered. For you to live, let it be Christ. Your blessedness and happiness will come in choosing the Christ-life, in doing, and continuing to do what He would have you do.”–HDS

SELF-CONTROL

October 12, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance….”–Gal. 5:22-23

Not only is it easy to see how our nation got into such a deplorable condition, it’s easy to see why our future seems so dim. We look at our situation, complain about it, and sometimes even debate the issues, but we don’t take action. We refuse to allow anything to disrupt our lifestyle. We talk about the dangers we face and how our future hangs in the balance, but we “fiddle while Rome burns”. The only thing most people are committed to is the pursuit of pleasure. As long as they are pleased nothing else seems to matter. Even those who would not admit to being one of those with a sense of entitlement, and do not depend on the government for a handout, are equally guilty when it comes to the sin of covetousness. So what do we do about it?

When’s the last time you thought about the words, “Confirm thy soul in self-control”? We often sing or hear the song without giving any serious thought as to what it is saying. We love to talk about freedom and liberty, but not so much about “self-control“. Self-government is great, but it works only for a virtuous  people. Our forefathers were emphatic about that. However when we are out of control, unable to govern ourselves, we are unable to elect the kind of people needed to rightly govern our nation. Our country is in this present mess, not because of any one leader or party, but because of the selfish, out of control populace that empowers them. And, if we look deep enough, I suspect we all can see that we are contributors to the problem. We cannot condone in ourselves what we condemn in others and expect anything to change for the better. As Christians we should know better.

For Christians the only acceptable form of self-control is to be Spirit-controlled. If we aren’t under His control we are out of control. This is a paradox–being Spirit-controlled results in self-control. He enables us to what we could never do on our own. Only by walking in the Spirit can we experience true self-control and walk in the path of righteousness (Gal. 5:16-21). — HDS, 10/12/16

THE WORLD IN A WORD

October 11, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

Romans 3:10-23

How would you describe the world in a word? Naturally that’s a matter of perspective. The naturalist might say, “beautiful”; the scientist might say “puzzling”; the merchant might say “opportunity”, etc. The list could go on and on, but what would you say? Ask people to describe the world in a word and you will get all kinds of answers. Some would say, “difficult”, “bad”, “terrible”, “confused”, “corrupt”, “sick”, etc. But it is actually much worse than any of those things. The best way to describe the world and the worst thing that can be said about the world are the same—“Sinful”. There is no better, more accurate, description of the world than that, and nothing worse could be said about it.

The problem is that this doesn’t sound all that bad to most people. They would be more impressed with words like awful, filthy, vile, rotten, putrid, etc. To simply say it is “sinful” doesn’t impact people as it should. They aren’t impressed because they have no real understanding of the word. If they did they would know that “sinful” is the best way to describe the world and that nothing worse could be said about it.

On a personal level we could say a person is ugly, uneducated, stupid, poor, hungry, sick, or suffering and that would get people’s attention, even draw out sympathy. But to say they are “sinful” hardly raises an eyebrow. The average person thinks, “So what?” If their accountant said,”You are bankrupt”; or their wife said,”I want a divorce”; or their doctor said, “You have cancer”; or the judge said, “I sentence you to life in prison”, they would be devastated. But if the preacher says, “You are a sinner”, they go on their merry way as though everything is fine. The truth is that sin is worse than bankruptcy, divorce, cancer, or prison. If we understood the true nature of sin we would realize that nothing is worse–absolutely nothing. Those who don’t hate it don’t understand it. The truth is that no man fully understands how horrible sin is. It is worse than anything we can imagine. Thankfully Christ is God’s remedy for sin. Because of His sacrifice we can be forgiven, cleansed, and set free from sin. He offers grace that is greater than all our sin–and that’s the best thing in the world! — HDS, 10/11/16

GRACE TO STAND

October 10, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“Having therefore obtained help of God, I continue unto this day.…” Acts 26:22

It had been through nearly twenty-five years of hard, toilsome life, that the heroic old apostle had stood, never giving up, never faltering in his confession. But he takes no praise to himself. The help came from God.

Many young people are afraid to set out on a Christian life, fearing they will not be able to be true to the end. Here is the word for all such; they will obtain help from God—for every duty, for every struggle, for every sorrow, which they must endure. They need only to be faithful day by day, doing the day’s duty, and trusting God for grace. The help will come silently, just as it is needed, always sufficient grace—so that they will ever be able to stand.

God never puts a burden upon us—without giving us the strength to carry it. The way to obtain help from him, is to go promptly forward in the way of duty, asking for the help, and sure of getting it. It will not come if we wait to get it before we set out to obey. It will come only as we do God’s will moment by moment.–J.R. Miller

THE INTERWEAVING OF THE DAYS

October 9, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

I speak often about the importance of living life one day at a time and I’ve given away hundreds of tracts with a poem about it. But we also need to consider the connection of one day with the others. In speaking of this, nobody has done it better than J. R. Miller who wrote the following in 1913:

It is a good thing to learn to live by the day. We should devote all our strength to the doing well of each day’s tasks — and then should disengage ourselves altogether from its entanglements. Emerson puts it well: “Finish every day — and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely; and with too high a spirit to be cumbered with your old nonsense. Today is all that is good and fair. It is too dear, with its, hopes and invitations — to waste a moment on the yesterdays.”

Yet as important as is the duty of fencing off the days and keeping them separate — there is a sense in which no day stands alone. The days are links in an endless chain. Each day receives an inheritance from yesterday, and at its close passes it down to the day which comes after. We start every new day with the memories of all our days trailing after us. We have all the knowledge gathered during the years that are gone. We have also the experience of the past by which our lives have been enriched, or possibly hurt. We are bound up, too, in the associations and friendships which have been formed. In countless ways, yesterday’s life and today’s are intertangled. Each day is but a little section of a great web, containing one figure of the pattern, the warp running through all the days and years. A life is a serial story, opening with infancy, closing with death, and each day is one little chapter in the story.

We best prepare for tomorrow, when we make today beautiful with truth and faithfulness. Today is the blossom — tomorrow is the fruit. Today is the sowing — tomorrow is the harvest. Far more than we realize, does tomorrow depend upon today. The Bible has its promises of divine care and provision; yet all such promises imply our faithfulness in duty as the condition of their fulfillment. A link dropped in the chain of obedience and fidelity will mean a break in the continuity of the blessing. Every minute is a key which, when touched, strikes a note somewhere in the future. If the touch is a true one — it will help to make music of love and joy. If it is a wrong touch — it will make a discord in the melody of life.
