PRACTICING CHRISTIANITY

October 8, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.”1 John 3:14

It is a great comfort to find that Love is not regarded by the Apostle as though it were merely an emotional or sentimental matter, for every reference points to action! The love of God was manifested in the laying down of His life, and we are to be willing to follow in His steps (1Jo 3:16). The injunction is that we should love in our deeds. We are not to shut up our hearts in compassion, but to help our brother in need. If we begin with doing kind and loving actions, we shall end by feeling the same. Often when people come to me, saying that love has completely died out of their life towards some other person, I have bidden them go back again, and act with love, making the other one the centre and object of helpful ministry; the invariable result is the refreshing and rekindling of the hot geyser-springs of affection.

Do not wait to feel love, but begin at once to show it, because it is right, and your duty, and as you step out in simple faith you will find that God will make this to abound towards that also abound in grace you may this good work. Love of such kind is self-giving and it is the gift of the Spirit of God. This exotic bloom cannot flourish on our wintry soil; the heart of man cannot furnish it. There may be a few wild growths, but they bear small comparison to its beautiful flower and fruit. Love is of God. It proceeds from His Nature, and is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit which is given unto us. “The fruit of the Spirit is love,” and as we are united with Christ by faith, the love of God will be shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit, and we shall be able to love with God’s love.

We know that we have been born from above as soon as we find ourselves willing to put the interests of another before our own, not because we have a natural affection or affinity for him, but because he and we belong to God. If there is hatred or dislike in our hearts towards any, let us beware! We must uproot it by generous action, or it will bring darkness into our own lives (1Jo 2:9-11).

Enable us, O God of patience, to bear one another’s burdens, and to forbear one another in love. Oh, teach and help us all to live in peace and to love in truth. Subdue all bitter resentments in our minds, and let the law of kindness be in our tongues. AMEN. — F. B. Meyer

WHY REJOICE?

October 7, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name. And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.”–Luke 10:17–20

When His disciples rejoiced at the victories they had seen in their work, Jesus pointed out to them that they were rejoicing in the wrong thing. The great reason we have for joy in our lives is not found in this world but in the next. Because of the gift of salvation we have received, we have the hope of eternal life that can never be taken away. Matthew Henry said, “Joy and peace as believers arises chiefly from our hopes. What is laid out upon us is but little, compared with what is laid up for us (in glory); therefore the more hope we have the more joy and peace we have.”

Victories in this world are good, but at best they are only temporary. Each sick person Jesus or the disciples healed still eventually died. But each person who heard and received the gospel received eternal life that could never be taken away. The main reason for our rejoicing should not be the short-term blessings we receive in this world. We should be thankful and give God praise when we see Him at work in our lives, but we must maintain our focus on the great gift of salvation.

Any temporal blessing we receive has a limited impact on our lives. But our names are written in Heaven forever, and our eternal destiny has already been sealed by God.(Daily in the Word)

GOD’S RESTORING LOVE

October 6, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“Take with you words, and turn to the LORD: say unto him, Take away all iniquity, and receive us graciously: so will we render the calves of our lips. Asshur shall not save us; we will not ride upon horses: neither will we say any more to the work of our hands, Ye are our gods: for in thee the fatherless findeth mercy. I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely: for mine anger is turned away from him.” — Hos 14:2-4

“ He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep.” — John 21:16

The causes of backsliding are many. We have pretended to be living a more devoted life than was actually the case; we neglected to watch unto prayer; we allowed secret sin to eat out the heart of our piety, as the white ant works destruction in the East; or we yielded to temptation, and then sought to justify ourselves against the remonstrances of conscience; or we yielded to the fear of man, and drifted with the multitude to do evil; or we became prosperous, and trusted only in our wealth; or poor, and succumbed to covetousness and the bitterness of despair.

The world despises the fallen, and does not believe in the possibility of entire restoration. It is always suspicious of those who have fallen from their high estate—the prisoner in the cell, who was once an honoured financier; the beautiful woman who has come under the degrading influence of drink or drugs; the minister or doctor who has incurred shame and disgrace—all such find it hard to be reinstated. But God stoops over the outcast with infinite compassion and love, and promises forgiveness and restoration to all who will return to Him.

It was thus that our Lord dealt with Peter. He knew that in spite of his grievous fall, there was a strong undercurrent of devoted love, and He did not hesitate to entrust to him the care of His sheep and lambs. In a certain museum there is a lovely marble statue which was found broken into hundreds of pieces. The fragments were carefully collected, and with infinite patience fitted together. Finally a seemingly impossible task was accomplished, and the statue stands in all its original completeness and beauty. So the Lord Jesus will take the broken pieces of any life that will come to Him, and with His skilful and tender touch will remake it into something useful and beautiful in His service…. The one thing that Christ asks of any of us is that we should follow Him. Whether we can walk, or need to be carried; whether life is young within us, or waning, let us follow Him, love Him, obey Him, and He will turn back our backslidings, and never mention them again.–F. B. Meyer

UNPLANNED THINGS

October 5, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

Dr. Paul Chappell recently asked this question, and then followed up with some good advice–“Do you ever have a day go differently than you planned? Or a year? Or an entire season of your life?

I’m a planner, and although I know in theory that God may change my plans and, in fact, has every right to intervene, I don’t always see His hand in the unplanned delays, changes, or upsets in the moment they occur.

I recently came across the paragraph below, written by an Irish Baptist pastor in 1840. It was a great encouragement to me:

Nothing can be more consoling to the man of God, than the conviction that the Lord who made the world governs the world; and that every event, great and small, prosperous and adverse, is under the absolute disposal of him who doth all things well, and who regulates all things for the good of his people…. The Christian will be confident and courageous in duty, in proportion as he views God in his Providence as ruling in the midst of his enemies; and acting for the good of his people, as well as for his own glory, even in the persecution of the Gospel.—Alexander Carson

When you and I believe—not just at a theological level, but as a deep, heart-embracing belief—that God is in control, we can battle valiantly for Him…even when the terrain of the battlefield feels absolutely outside our control.

Consider the Apostle Paul who lived with constantly-changing circumstances outside his control. His trust in God kept him anchored and gave him the courage and confidence to press forward.

Think, for instance, of Paul’s words to a storm-tossed ship crew, remembering that these were spoken when “all hope that we should be saved was then taken away.”

Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer: for I believe God, that it shall be even as it was told me.—Acts 27:25

If you’re having an unplanned day, or living in a season that feels helplessly out of your control, take courage in God’s sovereignty, and take confidence in His goodness. He is acting on your behalf. Love Him, trust Him, and press forward for Him.”

TAKING TIME FOR GOD

October 4, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“I prevented the dawning of the morning, and cried: I hoped in thy word. Mine eyes prevent the night watches, that I might meditate in thy word.“–Ps.119:147-148

We live in a broken fallen world, facing a fierce foe, with feeble flesh. How in the world are we supposed to succeed? We are called to live a miracle– above and beyond what we are able in and of ourselves. Regardless of how hard we try we eventually fail. We need supernatural help that God alone can supply. To be victorious we must appropriate what He has made available.

I can’t help but wonder how many people honestly agree with Job when he said, “..I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food” (Job 23:12), or the Psalmist who said, “O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day“(Ps. 119:97). Many seem to think they can get along quite well without it.

We often hear people say, “I’ve just got to take a day to______.” But I can’t remember anyone saying, I’ve just got to take a day to get alone with God. Why? Do they never need days like that? Are other things more important? Would it be a waste of time? Do you worry about what others would think if you said, “I just read my Bible, prayed, and meditated all day”?

To say days like that aren’t necessary is foolish. Just as flowers need sunshine and rain, just as flesh needs food, we need what God alone can provide. Do you really think you can deprive yourself of communion with Christ and not impoverish your soul? If you’re too busy for that you’re just too busy! Those who neglect this will suffer the consequences– no doubt about it.

Spiritual growth is essential to our well being and it can’t happen without nourishment from God’s Word. We are engaged is spiritual warfare and prayer is necessary for victory. Peace of mind is crucial to our success and that is acquired by meditating on Christ. Joy empowers us and it comes through communion with Christ. Now tell me again that you don’t have time for days like this. Sorry, I don’t believe you.

Our godly goals, natural needs, successful service, and personal peace all depend on the quality time that we spend with the Lord. If we crowd Him out we shut the door to all He offers and open the door for all manner of evil to enter in. Call it what you will—daily devotion, quiet time, private prayer, Bible study, you must take time for communion with God or suffer the consequences.
