IMAGINE THE IMPOSSIBLE

May 23, 2012 By Pastor David Stone

“Believe ye that I am able to do this?” (Matt. 9:28).

Someone said,”Nothing is too hard for Jesus. No man can work like Him”. Truer words were never spoken. We, however, tend to forget that when we are under the pressure of some great problem. We often imagine that our situation is impossible because it is too difficult for us. That’s what happens when you leave God out of the picture! Perhaps these words from an old publication called “The Sunday School Times” will get your mind back on the right track:

God deals with impossibilities. It is never too late for Him to do so, when the impossible is brought to Him, in full faith, by the one in whose life and circumstances the impossible must be accomplished if God is to be glorified. If in our own life there have been rebellion, unbelief, sin, and disaster, it is never too late for God to deal triumphantly with these tragic facts if brought to Him in full surrender and trust. It has often been said, and with truth, that Christianity is the only religion that can deal with man’s past. God can “restore the years that the locust hath eaten” (Joel 2:25); and He will do this when we put the whole situation and ourselves unreservedly and believingly into His hands. Not because of what we are but because of what He is. God forgives and heals and restores. He is “the God of all grace.” Let us praise Him and trust Him.

THE RADIANCE OF HIS GLORY

May 22, 2012 By Pastor David Stone

Commenting on Hebrews 1:1-3,author Terry Virgo said: God spoke in several ways in the past but in these last days God has spoken to us in His Son, who is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature.

He is the outshining radiance of God. No man has seen God at any time. Just as we cannot gaze directly at the sun, but can often see magnificent rays of sunlight pouring through gaps in the clouds, so we cannot see God but we can know Him through the One who has come to us where we are.

The sun’s rays are the outshining of the sun. They are the sun coming to us in ways that it is possible for us to see. Jesus came to man radiating the presence of God.

So, what are you focused on? Where is your attention? Are you thinking about your problems, your powerlessness, your pleasure, your possessions, your popularity, etc? Since God is speaking, should not we listen? Since God is showing us “the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person” (Hebrews 1:3) through Christ would we not be fools to focus on anything but Christ?

If you feel over-whelmed, burdened-down, fearful, lonely, sad and blue, you should be “Looking unto Jesus”(Heb. 12:2)—“consider him”(Heb. 12:3) and it will make a world of difference. When you can’t change or control your circumstances, consider Christ and although nothing else changes, it will change you! And we all need to be changed.

JUST TRUST HIM

May 21, 2012 By Pastor David Stone

He knoweth the way that I take.–Job 23:10

Man’s goings are of the Lord; how can a man then understand his own way?–
Prov. 20:24

Someone wrote this little poem about a subject that grates on our nerves—-

Be quiet, why this anxious heed
  About thy tangled ways?
God knows them all, He giveth speed,
  And He allows delays.

Ah, that’s the problem—“He allows delays”. And we don’t like it. We want what we want when we want it. We tend to get irritated when things don’t go like we think they should. Some old folks spend their last years in bitter resentment because they can no longer do the things they used to do with ease. They become a curse to themselves and everyone within listening distance of their complaints. Perhaps these words from Stopford A. Brooke will help us view things differently:

We complain of the slow, dull life we are forced to lead, of our humble sphere of action, of our low position in the scale of society, of our having no room to make ourselves known, of our wasted energies, of our years of patience. So do we say that we have no Father who is directing our life; so do we say that God has forgotten us; so do we boldly judge what life is best for us, and so by our complaining do we lose the use and profit of the quiet years. O men of little faith! Because you are not sent out yet into your labor, do you think God has ceased to remember you? Because you are forced to be outwardly inactive, do you think you, also, may not be, in your years of quiet, “about your Father’s business”? It is a period given to us in which to mature ourselves for the work which God will give us to do.

FIX YOUR FOCUS

May 20, 2012 By Pastor David Stone

Set your affections on things above, not on things on the earth.- – Colossians 3:2

On May 6, 1954, Roger Bannister became the very first man in recorded history to run a mile in less than 4 minutes. But within 2 months, John Landy eclipsed his record by 1.4 seconds. So on August 7, 1954, the two met together for a historic race.

As they moved into the final lap, Landy held the lead and it looked as if he would win. But as he neared the finish he was haunted by the question, “Where is Bannister?” As he turned to look, Bannister, just behind him, took the lead and won the race. Landy later told a reporter, “If I hadn’t looked back, I would have won!”

As Christians, one of the most important things we can do is to focus on what really matters—God. But the problem is that very often, we become so consumed with the minutia of daily life that we allow it to take our eyes off of the ultimate prize. This causes us to become distracted, often losing ground in our walk with Christ.

But if we keep our eyes on Jesus and don’t allow sin and distractions of the world to pull us aside (Hebrews 12:1), we’ll maintain our heaven-focused perspective on the challenges when they arise. So don’t let the small stuff take your attention away from what really matters. Keep your head forward and your eyes on the cross, and you’re guaranteed victory at the finish line!

Pray that God would help you stay focused on Him when you’re tempted to let life’s challenges distract you.–Senior Living

WELCOME HIS WILL

May 19, 2012 By Pastor David Stone

“Blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me” (Luke 7:23).

It is sometimes very difficult not to be offended in Jesus Christ. The offenses may be circumstantial. I find myself in a prison-house — a narrow sphere, a sick chamber, an unpopular position — when I had hoped for wide opportunities. Yes, but He knows what is best for me. My environment is of His determining. He means it to intensify my faith, to draw me into nearer communion with Himself, to ripen my power. In the dungeon my soul should prosper. The offense may be mental. I am haunted by perplexities, questions, which I cannot solve. I had hoped that, when I gave myself to Him, my sky would always be clear; but often it is overspread by mist and cloud. Yet let me believe that, if difficulties remain, it is that I may learn to trust Him all the more implicitly — to trust and not be afraid. Yes, and by my intellectual conflicts, I am trained to be a tutor to other storm-driven men.

The offense may be spiritual. I had fancied that within His fold I should never feel the biting winds of temptation; but it is best as it is. His grace is magnified. My own character is matured. His Heaven is sweeter at the close of the day. There I shall look back on the turnings and trials of the way, and shall sing the praises of my Guide. So, let come what will come, His will is welcome; and I shall refuse to be offended in my loving Lord. –Alexander Smellie
