THE WORLD IN A WORD

October 11, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

Romans 3:10-23

How would you describe the world in a word? Naturally that’s a matter of perspective. The naturalist might say, “beautiful”; the scientist might say “puzzling”; the merchant might say “opportunity”, etc. The list could go on and on, but what would you say? Ask people to describe the world in a word and you will get all kinds of answers. Some would say, “difficult”, “bad”, “terrible”, “confused”, “corrupt”, “sick”, etc. But it is actually much worse than any of those things. The best way to describe the world and the worst thing that can be said about the world are the same—“Sinful”. There is no better, more accurate, description of the world than that, and nothing worse could be said about it.

The problem is that this doesn’t sound all that bad to most people. They would be more impressed with words like awful, filthy, vile, rotten, putrid, etc. To simply say it is “sinful” doesn’t impact people as it should. They aren’t impressed because they have no real understanding of the word. If they did they would know that “sinful” is the best way to describe the world and that nothing worse could be said about it.

On a personal level we could say a person is ugly, uneducated, stupid, poor, hungry, sick, or suffering and that would get people’s attention, even draw out sympathy. But to say they are “sinful” hardly raises an eyebrow. The average person thinks, “So what?” If their accountant said,”You are bankrupt”; or their wife said,”I want a divorce”; or their doctor said, “You have cancer”; or the judge said, “I sentence you to life in prison”, they would be devastated. But if the preacher says, “You are a sinner”, they go on their merry way as though everything is fine. The truth is that sin is worse than bankruptcy, divorce, cancer, or prison. If we understood the true nature of sin we would realize that nothing is worse–absolutely nothing. Those who don’t hate it don’t understand it. The truth is that no man fully understands how horrible sin is. It is worse than anything we can imagine. Thankfully Christ is God’s remedy for sin. Because of His sacrifice we can be forgiven, cleansed, and set free from sin. He offers grace that is greater than all our sin–and that’s the best thing in the world! — HDS, 10/11/16

GOD’S GREATNESS

September 30, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

We sing “There is no God like Jehovah” and indeed that is true– in fact there is no true God but Jehovah. He is the superlative God. He is bigger, better, higher, and greater than all others. God is in a class by Himself. There is none like Him. He is the only true and living God. We cannot think nor speak too highly or too often of Him. In Him we live, move, and have our being.

It is impossible to over estimate His goodness, over exaggerate His greatness, over emphasize His grace, over evaluate His guidance, or over exult His glory.

God’s grace is immeasurable
mercy is inexhaustible
love is indescribable
goodness is incredible
compassion is inconceivable
blessings are incomparable
gifts are invaluable
greatness is incalculable
holiness is imperishable
character is impeccable
glory is ineffable
majesty is imponderable
power is invincible
faithfulness is immutable
decrees are immovable
kingdom is interminable
righteousness is indispensable
children are inseparable
ways are incomprehensible
will is infallible
word is indestructible
peace is inexpressible
presence is inspirational

God longs for our love, orders our obedience, commands our consecration, demands our dedication, and deserves our devotion.

We should know Him intimately, love Him wholeheartedly, trust Him completely, worship Him sincerely, serve Him faithfully, speak of Him passionately, praise Him constantly, and pray to Him continually.–HDS, 9/30/16

BROUGHT TO JESUS

September 19, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“ And, behold, there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name; and when he saw him, he fell at his feet, And besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter lieth at the point of death: I pray thee, come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed; and she shall live.”– Mark 5:22-23

At the feet of Jesus in humble submission and complete dependency is where we all ought to be. But what does it take to get us there? It might surprise you, but the things we dislike the most are often what is most needful in getting us where we need to be. J. R. Miller explained it like this—-

“There is nothing like trouble to drive people to Christ. So long as things go on prosperously, many men do not ask any favours of Him; but when sickness or great need comes, He is the first to whom they turn. This is one of the most obvious uses of trouble….There are many in heaven now who would never have left the old earthly life had not God sent troubles, sorrows, and adversities.

This father said his little daughter was ‘at the point of death.’ This is one point to which every one must come. The paths of earth run in very diverse ways, but they all pass at last the “point of death.” It is a point that lies hidden from view; no one knows the day of the hour when he will come to it, and yet somewhere along the sunny years it waits for every one. Sometimes this point is struck in early youth. Here it is a little girl of twelve that lies “at the point of death.” Even the children should think about dying, not as a sad and terrible thing, but as a point to which they must come, and for which they should prepare.

It is a touching sight to see this father falling at Christ’s feet. The strongest men break down when their own children are sick or in danger. A man may seem very cold and stern as he carries his load of business, or makes his struggle with the world, or presses toward the goal of his ambition. You think he has no tenderness in him — that he is a man of iron or rock. But let one of his children be stricken down, and your man of iron melts like wax.”

Indeed, sometimes it is “at the point of death” that we discover the path to life. Sometimes what is least desirable is most needed. Afflictions might be mysterious, but they are never meaningless. There is a purpose in your pain– God has a plan for your problems! — HDS

THE PRIORITY OF LOVE

September 15, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.“–Colossians 3:14

A little girl stayed for dinner at the home of her first grade friend. The vegetable was buttered broccoli and the mother asked if she liked it. The child politely replied, “Oh, yes, I love it!” But when the broccoli was passed she declined to take any. The hostess said, “I thought you said you loved broccoli.” The girl replied sweetly, “Oh, yes ma’am, I do, but not enough to eat it.”

Do you love your fellow Christians in this church? “Oh, yes,” you say, “the Lord commanded us to love one another. I love the Lord’s people!” Well, then, why are you and that brother not on speaking terms? “Him? He ripped me off in a business deal. And he calls himself a Christian!” I see. Why are there hard feelings between you and that sister over there? “Her? She’s a gossip. Do you know what she said about me behind my back? The Lord knows that I’ve tried to be nice to her, but there has to be a limit on how much you do for someone like her.” Okay. Yes, we love broccoli, but not enough to eat it . We love the brethren, but not enough to work out our differences. Like Linus, we love humanity; it’s people we can’t stand! Have you ever thought about what it would have been like to have been a part of the first century church? We often glamorize it, thinking how wonderful it must have been. But remember, there was only one church per city. If you lived in Colossae and became a Christian, you were a member of the church in Colossae. In Colossae, there wasn’t a church for Jewish Baptists and another for Gentile Presbyterians and another for Scythian charismatics. If you didn’t like the church or had a falling out with someone in that church, you were stuck. You couldn’t jump in your chariot and commute to another church down the road that you liked better.(Steven Cole). Point being— we must learn to love our way through our problems.

Notice what preceded our text–“Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.” (Col. 3:12-13)But, says Paul, “...above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness”. Love is on the top of the list.—HDS

REJECTING GOD

August 27, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“And he was casting out a devil, and it was dumb. And it came to pass, when the devil was gone out, the dumb spake; and the people wondered. But some of them said, He casteth out devils through Beelzebub the chief of the devils.”–Luke 11:14–15

Despite all the evidence available from astronomy, the space program and history, the Flat Earth Society still exists, claiming hundreds of members. The group, which traces its roots back to the 1800s continues to promote the flat disk model of the earth that posits a world ringed by a wall of ice. No matter how many astronauts they talk to, no matter how many moon rocks they see, no matter how many pictures taken from space they are shown, they deny the reality in favor of clinging to their beliefs.

While we may be amused by people who believe the world is flat, many people in our world take the same approach to God. There is no shortage of evidence for His existence, because the very creation speaks to the need for a Creator. But people realize that acknowledging creation requires an accountability, so instead they cling to anything else, no matter how far-fetched it may be, rather than admitting that God is real.

This is not a new thing. Peter dealt with people who refused to acknowledge God. “For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water” (2 Peter 3:5). To willingly be ignorant is preferable to these people to admitting the existence of God and facing the fact that they will one day have to face Him and be judged. As Christians we have experienced the reality of God at work in our lives, and we should be not just telling but also showing those around us that He is real.(Daily in the Word)

Do you remember the old Stuart Hamlen song “It is no Secret”? My dear friend God’s existence is no secret, nor is “what He can do” a secret. There is evidence of His presence and power all around you. Pretending He doesn’t exist doesn’t make Him go away. God is real and He will be your deliverer or your judge and executioner. The choice is yours.–HDS
